Welcome to SummerFestival!

The Brigham Young University School of Music invites you to participate in the Young Musicians’ SummerFestival and Institute. SummerFestival is a six–day summer camp for young instrumentalists and vocalists ages 14–18 who want to improve their musical skills and talents.

The Musicians Institute is a new advanced mini-camp held June 14-17, 2017, immediately prior to the SummerFestival. It focuses on chamber and solo literature in both the classical and jazz idioms. More information can be found at here

Located on the Brigham Young University campus, SummerFestival offers instruction in more than 20 instruments, including voice. Musical styles include classical, big band, jazz, blues, etc. Instruction is by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Instruction is offered at the intermediate and advanced levels*. Each participant may enroll for the camp in one instrument only.

Placement videos must be submitted prior to the camp and are used to assign students to ensembles and teachers. Participant placements are assigned by School of Music faculty and guest instructors. Rehearsals begin on Monday morning.

Your schedule Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will include band, orchestra, choir, or jazz ensemble rehearsals , as well as sectionals and master classes (depending on your instrument). You may also choose from music history, theory, and other electives to complete your daily schedules.  Individual practice times may also be included as part of your schedule. Your evenings will include concerts, dances, barbecue, counselor–planned activities, and a silent film accompanied by live organ music.

SummerFestival concludes with participant concerts on Friday evening, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Families and friends are invited to attend the Friday evening and Saturday concerts.

As a SummerFestival participant, you must meet the performance standards described for your instrument. Some ensemble repertoire will be at a high level. Enrollment is limited and is on a first–come, first–served basis. Many instrument sections fill quickly, so we encourage you to register early.

*Organ instruction is at the beginning level.
